Google Adwords Basic Grammar

Below is the basic vernacular for anyone who uses Google Adwords. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with these terms and try to understand them in the context of creating a paid Google Ad Campaign

Ad Rank

An ad's position is based on its Ad Rank, which is determined by your keyword(s) and Ad Group's maximum cost-per-click (CPC) times the matched keyword's Quality Score. For the top positions above Google search results, however, we use your ad's actual CPC to determine its position.
Click-Through-Rate (CTR)
Click-Through-Rate (CTR) is the number of clicks your ad receives divided by the number of times your ad is shown (impressions).
Conversion
When a user completes an action on your site, such as buying something or requesting more information.
Conversion Rate (CR)
The number of conversions divided by the number of ad clicks. Conversions can be calculated through Google and some Google Network partners. Conversion Rates can also be tracked on the hosting server independently of Google using appropriate coding techniques.
Cost-Per-Click (CPC)
The pricing structure used by some online channels to charge an advertiser each time a user clicks on the advertiser's ad. The amount is usually set by the advertiser, not by the channel.
See pay-per-click (PPC).
Daily Budget
The amount to spend on a specific AdWords campaign each day.
AdWords displays your ad as often as possible while staying within your daily budget. When the budget limit is reached, your ads will typically stop showing for that day
Destination URL
When you create your ad, you'll specify a display URL and a destination URL. The
destination URL is the exact URL within your website that you want to send users to from your ad.
Display URL
This is the URL displayed on your ad to identify your site to users. The green text in the sample ad below is the display URL. Users clicking on this ad have a clear idea of the website or landing page to which they'll be taken when they click on that ad.
Keyword
The keywords you choose for a given Ad Group are used to target your ads to potential
customers.
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal?defaultView=3
Landing Page
An active web page where customers will 'land' when they click your ad. The web address for this page is often called a 'destination URL' or 'clickthrough URL.'
Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
The pricing structure used by some online channels to charge an advertiser each time a user clicks on the advertiser's ad. The amount is usually set by the advertiser, not by the channel.
See cost-per-click (CPC).
Prospect
A candidate: someone who is considered for something (in the context of this book, a
potential customer or client)
Return on Investment (ROI)
The benefit gained in return for the cost of your ad campaign. Although exact measurement is nearly impossible, your clickthrough rate and your conversion rate combined with your
advertising costs, can help you assess the ROI of your campaign.
URL - (Uniform Resource Locator)
The address/location of a webpage or file on the Internet.

Having reviewed the above you should have no problem understanding the following:

I recommend that in order to increase the number and quality of prospects from your adword campaigns you should always institute some means of conversion tracking through Google conversion tracking or the like. Knowing the click through rates gives you no information regarding ROI.

Translation:
The real measure of the success of an adword campaign is not the number of people that saw the ad or clicked on it but the number of people that clicked on the ad and then MADE A PURCHASE. If you can't tell which ads are generating sales and which are just getting clicks you cannot optimize your marking campaigns.

Once you have established a means of tracking your conversion rates, then you should create a series of keyword focused campaigns with minimal daily budgets and reasonable CPC so your ads will be visible on the first page and your destination URL should be directed to a landing page that reflects the product or service you are advertising.

Translation:
Once you can track sales, then you should create a series of Google Ads with low daily budgets and a reasonable cost per click that will enable your ad to show on the first page of search results and the ad should link directly to the page of your web site where your product or service is sold.

A good technique for increasing ROI for your various campaigns is to create 2-3 ad variations for each keyword campaign and then track the resultant click through rates and conversions. Compare the results and invest and make changes accordingly.

Translation:
Make 2-3 variations on each ad observe the changes in the number clicks and resultant sales. Based on this information, put more money on the campaigns that make more money than they cost and change or eliminate those that don't.

Revolutionary new way to compute

Today Microsoft announced the development of a new kind of tabletop computer that operates totally through touch screen. The touchscreen part is not that groudbreaking but the way this computer interfaces with other devices placed on it is. Check it out in Popular Mechanics. Here's a video demonstration:

Flow and E-Commerce

While getting my Master's in Educational Technology at SDSU we studied Csikszentmihalyi's Flow theory as it related to Educational Gaming. It's something that also applies to the creation of a shopping Web site. The point being, if a site is too challenging (difficult to navigate, confusing) or if it's not engaging at all (boring) people won't want to go there. Finding the right mix of challenge and fun will help those who visit your site get into a "flow," a place where they are so engaged in what they are doing that they forget about time and the outside world.

Below is a segment of an article from informit.com about optimizing flow in Web design. I found it fascinating. It points out that for those serious about creating sites where people love to shop there's more to it than catchy graphics.

An Interview with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

To find out more about flow, speed, and web design, I talked to Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who popularized the notion of flow.

Andy King: You talk about immediate feedback being a prerequisite for the flow state. How does speed of interaction influence flow?

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: If you mean the speed at which the program loads, the screens change, the commands are carried out—then indeed speed should correlate with flow. If you are playing a fantasy game, for instance, and it takes time to move from one level to the next, then the interruption allows you to get distracted, to lose the concentration on the alternate reality. You have time to think: "Why am I wasting time on this? Shouldn't I be taking the dog for a walk, or studying?"—and the game is over, psychologically speaking.

King: Responsive feedback of an activity and feelings of control go hand in hand. Can you elaborate on that?

Csikszentmihalyi: Actually it's not so much the "feeling" of control, as the fact that you can act without thinking, without interruption, and making your own choices (for example, BEING in control). If a computer program has a mind of its own, is not responsive to your commands, or is so slow as to appear to be a moron, then you are again brought back to "reality" and lose flow.

King: Has your definition of flow changed over the years?

Csikszentmihalyi: The only change has been that we found it takes above average challenges AND skills to get into flow. Also, there seem to be individual differences so that some people prefer to be in control (that is, high skill, moderate challenge) to being in flow.

King: You said that web sites should be like a gourmet meal to enable flow. Can you elaborate?

Csikszentmihalyi: What I meant is that like in a good meal, you should have varieties of tastes and textures, metaphorically speaking.

King: What do you think the key attributes would be of web sites that enable flow?

Csikszentmihalyi: The key attribute is that it should be very user-friendly and transparent at first, but one should immediately be able to find complexity in it, so as to find quickly the right level of opportunities for "action" that match one's skills. These "challenges" include the visual aspects as well as the content.

Shopping Site Design

Hoffman, Novak, and Yung performed an additional survey on web shopping using a list of features that shoppers found important on the Internet. They found customer support to be very important for a "smooth" shopping experience. Speed plays a role in a compelling shopping experience, contributing significantly to ease of contact and variety.

Variety and quality of information are important to consumers. Shoppers don't want cutting-edge technology, however. It just gets in the way of consumer goals.

Final Project Proposal

I've posted a simple e-commerce site that I built last week. It has an off site shopping cart, an asp survey form and rather graphics intensive design. This was a low cost site with basic e-commerce capabilities. The client is pleased with it. Personally, I can do much better but there was no budget for a marketing analysis or content development so encouraged them to provide better materials and then did the best I could to make it look good.

The site is located www.proshuffler.com

The product is a professional grade card shuffler which is competing with machines that cost 10 times as much.

Currently, the product is taking pre-orders the client expects to have the production models available by late June.

I was hoping to have my new site done but business has been good and I did not have the time.
I have been reformulating my entire business strategy and expect the new site to be very effective.

Progress on my final

We’ll the story so far. I have my site posted on the web. I have changed a few things and will do more, as I get better at graphics. I have been testing the site with different Internet browsers. I have tried Avanti which has a cool mouse clicks for navigation. Opera, Firefox, Maxthon, Netscape and Neoplanet. But being careful I notice a lot of network traffic when I would use some of the browsers. So I checked for Spyware after each use of each browser. I use Lavasoft’s Ad-aware Se free version on my Sleekline P4 XP Pro OS in the garage above my workbench. I do have a few computers I have collected over the years. If any body wants a free Pentium 1 let me know. Here is what I found. With Avanti version 11 I didn’t get any Spyware infections the same for Firefox version 1.2.For Opera version 9.2, Maxthon version 1.5.9, and Netscape version 8.2. I had two for each one I used each time I used them. I tried Neoplanet 5.1, which can read to you as you use it. Had eleven instances of Spyware. (Please this is not about who uses which program for Internet or for Spyware scanning. As I have used the programs I have for years and have not had too many problems as I have tried different programs at different corporations and at home. That I know what works for me). If you must know I use Eset’s Nod32 for my AV. So my advice is be careful and check your Spyware program for the latest updates and that it is working. If you do not want one I wish you well. Most are luckier than I

Final Project

For my final project, I would like to create a working website-option 1. I hope to be able to use Mira Costa's web space until I arrange something else. I searched the web for domain names and, unfortunately, all of the names I want have been taken already. So I must come up with a new name that works with my business. A name that has something to do with traveling the world to photograph special occasions/weddings. Any suggestions?

Hey It Finals

Dear fellow students in my class (classmates). I have posted my web site at http://www.tutorsinscience.com/ . Please check it out test it. Comment on it please. The cost for this was quite cheap and easy, click on the link on the home page. I bought the beginners package. The free coffee cup HTML editor was easy also, but like everything else it takes some getting use to. The copy and paste, the putting links in took some time. Mostly paste in code and look and see in preview what it would look like. I do have plenty of tissues for a good cry, so tell me what you think. Thanks for everything maybe we should meet at Enzo’s on Oceanside Boulevard for brunch and talk. It’s near college Boulevard and Oceanside Boulevard. You can email me through the web site. Just a suggestion Ya ‘All. Russ

Idea to get your Webpage more noticed...

A friend of mine just sent me his webpage address. It's a service that will add a voice-over onto a picture you post on your webpage. The idea is that most of the people will not take the time to read the content of your page. I think, this is a great way to get the attention of potential customers and increase your chances to stand out.
Check it out...

Final Proposal

Well i posted my proposal but I do not see anymore. I hope I am not late on the repost. My proposal is for Auto Extreme Inc. in Option 1. I do not know about this blog thing. I has a problem on where to post because I know I posted here before but I read other students proposal I guess I am not the only one. I will create Auto Extreme from the ground up probanlu grabbing ideas from other sites. I just hope it turns out right. -Carlos

Final Proposal

I posted my proposal previously, but do not see it here anymore. So for those of you that missed it (and to make sure I get credit for it) I'm reposting.

For my final project I will be completing proposal number 1. I plan to have my own website created at the close of this class.

Final Project Proposal

Hello everyone, as you read in Janas post we just got the opportunity to create a website with my Mom. She will be importing Natural Polish Collagen and we will be creating a site for her to publicize and sell these products online. We will be doing our best use what we learned in class and make her site search engine friendly as well. We are already working hard on it and will have a link soon. Please let us know what you think and if you have any suggestion on improvements they'd be most welcome. The site will likely have more then 5 pages ;-)

-Peter Ochabski
BTW we are also re-vamping artscientific.com so please check it out over the next few days as well!

Final Proposal

Hi all!
I have to apologize that it has taken so long to catch up to the class in posting my (our) final project proposal on the blog. Peter and I have recently been presented with the opportunity to write an e-commerce site for his mom to promote the sale of a european product. It is a natural collagen moisturizer that is widely sold in Europe but is just reaching the US. There are three levels of potency (platinum, silver, and graphite) all sold in three sizes. This is a very exciting business venture as we were not sure that this would happen in time to use this as our final project. Since it has (thankfully!) we are putting our stories web site on hold for now to focus on this project.

Small Business 101

The New York Times has just started a new section entitled Small Business 101. It's loaded with great advice and resources for budding entrepreneurs.

The intial article states that it's never been easier to start a new business, but the real challenge is to actually sell something. However, experts say "Success comes with education, careful planning and adequate cash flow."

I'll be including some of the great links they provide on this blog and in a future resources page being created for my Web site.

Final Project Proposal

I will do option 1, and create a five page web site. I will do it on the potential business Inspired Education. I will be starting from scratch and this is my first web site project, which is exciting. I will probably use paypal for the shopping cart and get some free web site space from miracosta.

final project

I am planning to create a web site that offers the service of casting permanently a badge or special keepsake in a clear resin. I have signed up with Homestead, but building the web site has been harder than I expected. I have some pictures of a few badges I made for Immigration recently. That's the plan anyhow.

Final Project Proposal - Protect & Serve

I intend to (option 1) put a 5-page website up on www.protect-serve.com, which I purchased last month. There will be a paypal or google checkout button for those intending to donate. I will have to scale back on my home page because I won't have merchandise to sell, etc., but I think just putting the information up, privacy policy and donation page will pretty much be 5 pages.

Sunday, April 29, 2007

Final Project Proposal

My Proposal is to complete Option one. That is to create a web page with a least 5 pages. One each of services and products. One each of about us and privacy policy. I do not have at this time a need to except credit card information or sales over the Internet. As I will need to speak to the persons needing the services. I will include a type of order form, but it will in all probability be an email contact link. It will be published on the www. The site maybe unprofessional looking or in workings, But I’m happy that with what I have accomplished with the limited time I have had and being the first time I have even had a course in e-business or any business for that matter. I created something that may well help me get a business and work for myself.

Here is a link on a subject you may wish to see about paypal.

Also here is a link for those who have wondered about the inter-workings of computers.
How does the small arrow in the screen of the computer work when we move the mouse? Haven't you ever wondered how it works? Now, through the miracle of high technology, we can see how it is done. With the aid of a screen magnifying lens, the mechanism becomes apparent. Be sure to move your mouse.

Final Project Proposal

Michelle Dastyck said...

For my Final Project I plan to launch a new ecommerce site - ShesStillGotIt.com from MichelleCosmetics.com. This it a totally new site will be created to sell fast and easy to use makeup kits designed for busy moms. Each kit has seven pieces and will take women from Play Dated to Date Night!

Project Proposal

For my final project I will create a web site for the business: Inspired Education! This will include a free trial page where people can try out our services for one month. Subscribers will be able to get a free gift basket of emails containing inspiring, educational things for one month straight.
Does anyone have any suggestion on whether I should call this a service or a project?

Final Project Proposals

I thought I would start a new thread to post our proposals to. I thought I had already submitted mine, but I couldn't find it.

Proposal:
I'm in the process of creating a dynamic site using PHP and MySQL to list all available childcare resources in Southern California. The static part of the site is mostly finished, but I'm still in the process of building the database structure and the PHP scripting. If the site is not complete enough to constitute a final project at the end of the term, I have also prepared a business plan as a back up.

Bowling for Virginia Tech

The terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech yesterday brings many things to mind, the horror of random gun violence, the deep sadness of parents who are now suffering the pain of their precious child dieing before they do, how those who are normally good people can do bad things, gun control - pro or con, the tenuous nature of our lives, the potentially violent influence of video games, and more -- however, this is an E-Commerce blog.

The thing I want to point out is how so many of the students had cell phones that were used to take instant photos and videos and then upload them immediately to the Web and to TV stations. Within seconds of the event, even while it was still happening, the images and sounds were being sent throughout the globe and shown on our TVs and computers. What implications does this have? Can it be a force that can help prevent this kind of violence in the future? What does it say about the amazing connectivity of our world, and the disconnect from it that would allow someone to even consider doing this?

On a personal note. In my classroom I once had an incident where the campus police came to apprehend one of my students because he was sending threatening email to other students and another teacher. Up until then I had never felt threatened by him. He seemed like a normal student, though he was a quiet and moody person. Suddenly, I felt vulnerable and frightened.

School normally feels like such a secure and safe place. It's disturbing when that sense of security is punctured by events like these.

Rules, rules and more rules

In trying to answer a students question about where rules, like the "rule of seven" came from I ran across this Web page from the North East Texas Consortium, a site that supports some colleges in that area. I loved the rule collection. It consolidated much of what I've learned over the years about making Web pages more understandable and how to prepare instructions. The "Kevin Bacon rule " is simply fun. Check it out.

Here's another reference to the Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two in Wikipedia (Wikipedia was originally created in Pacific Beach, btw).

Is there really a Web 2.0?

I have a friend who recently went on a major rant over use of the term Web 2.0. He pointed out that the term is really misleading because there is actually not a second generation of the Web. Sites such as Wikipedia, and YouTube, LimeWire and applications such as RSS (Really Simple Syndication) are not using any radically new technology, just old technology used in a new way. The major difference lies in the fact that these sites and technologies are now two way streets instead of one. Information no longer simply flows from provider to user, client to server, things flow back and forth.

Courtesy of O'Reilly, the folks who helped coin the term "Web 2.0" here's a list of Web 1.0 entities and their Web 2.0 equivalents:

Web 1.0 --> Web 2.0
DoubleClick --> Google AdSense
Ofoto --> Flickr
Akamai --> BitTorrent
mp3.com --> LimeWire
Britannica Online --> Wikipedia
personal websites --> blogging
evite --> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation --> search engine optimization
page views --> cost per click
screen scraping --> web services
publishing --> wikis
directories (taxonomy) --> tagging ("folksonomy")
stickiness --> syndication

Since there's not a radical new technology being used here, just technology being used differently do you think Web 2.0 is still a good moniker? Is it simply a marketing ploy or does it have real meaning? Is there another name you think would be better?

Also, what do you think the impact of this interactive way of using the Web is having on eCommerce? How do you think you can use "Web 2.0" stuff in your efforts to create a viable business on the Web?

I was checking out my email when I was added as a twitter friend of franticindustries. Previously franticindustries was one of my RSS feeds and now I have a more intimate knowledge of what is going on over there due to the ease of use of twitter. Go ahead and check out this latest blog entry. It has to do with how people create a single product or a business and how they are different yet are related. This is a great read.

Money for this blog

How about adding Google AdSense to this blog. It would be a great way to show the function of the application and how it pertains to our class especially the lesson on affiliate marketing. We could then take whatever money is made and give it to a charity.

Video options

Here is my thought for the evening. With Youtube and a couple of other sites out there I figure why not use their services to host all your video for your site and save on bandwidth costs. I am curious to see how this works since all you are doing is linking via your website as opposed to hosting the video yourself. In this day and age Youtube is so accepted that I don't see any negative aspects of Youtube branding on your own business site.

Please chime in on this one and let me know what your thoughts.

Obtaining Insurance for E-Businesses

Throughout the class we have been talking about every aspect of creating an e-business, even some students have started / opened an e-business, but we have not discuss the insurance aspect of doing business. Americans love to sue over anything, which means if you get sued, and you are not insured, and you are any other entity other than a “C” Corporation you could lose all your assets (everything). I think insurance should also be a top priority before you open for business. Maybe Don could give us more insight on this subject, and the different types of insurance options.

Need a Merchant Account?

Reprinted from SuperMomPreneur...

Everyone is familiar with PayPal, and now Google Checkout is giving them a run for their money. But my professor suggested I look into Costco's Merchant Account offerings. Here's the lowdown:

  • 1.99% plus .27 per transaction.
  • Accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, debit cards and corporate purchasing cards.**
  • $4.95 monthly statement fee - waived for Executive Members
  • One time $25 application fee - waived for Executive Members
  • Live customer service 24-hours a day / 7-days a week
  • Free basic online merchant account access
  • No batch fees

So, if you pay for an executive membership ($100 annually), all your fees are waived. I'm already a member, but I'd have to pay that extra $50, but it would be worth it to avoid a $5 monthly statement fee.

Also, Executive Gold Star members (still $100) get 2% back on their purchases throughout the year. If you bought all your office supplies and stuff there, that would really add up. Plus, executive membership includes a household card, so I guess you can buy your food also, and get the 2% on that. This seems ideal for someone like me starting a sole proprietorship...I'm always looking for those extra little rewards for my family.

I'm still deciding which to use, but it looks like it's going to come down to the extras...any thoughts?

Email Choices

I have been enjoying the functionality of gmail so much I was thinking about using it as my only email application for my upcoming e-commerce site. Who else is using gmail and would you also consider it as your standalone email application? For those of you who don't have an account I strongly suggest getting a gmail account and also check out other features of google such as google docs and spreadsheets.

I just started using google spreadsheets this past month and just being able to have access to your work no matter where you login is a thing of beauty.

Hope this stirs up the coals in your mind to go out and continue to try new ideas. Me being a semi-older guy (46yrs) just shows that you can catchup and enjoy the latest ideas on the web.
